Presented by Dance Place, Dance Box Theater's Naked King: Subject to Change - Part 1 exposes white supremacy, power and abuse in order to transform towards equity, justice and healing. This full-evening dance theater work examines systems of oppression that perpetuate racism and misogyny, and explores how these cycles of abuse manifest in the art form of dance. Through Naked King: Subject to Change - Part 1, Dance Box Theater Co-Artistic Directors Stephen Clapp and Laura Schandelmeier ask, "Is it possible to navigate towards truth and healing when bombarded with syndicated lies and celebratory misogyny amidst a culture of sexual aggression and ongoing displays of racism at the highest levels of power?" Naked King: Subject to Change - Part 1 is created and performed by Co-Artistic Directors Stephen Clapp and Laura Schandelmeier, in collaboration with Ronya Lee Anderson, Valerie Branch, Melissa Lineburg, Tariq O'Meally and Pricilla Smith as The Real Donna J. Trump. The work includes an original music score by Stephen Clapp, costumes by Pauline Anderson and Ronya-Lee Anderson, lighting design by Marianne Meadows, and staging and dramaturgy by Holly Bass. Naked King: Subject to Change - Part 1 exposes an abusive system within a Trumpian environment that seeks to dismantle itself through creative process. Like the child in Hans Christian Anderson's tale, Dance Box Theater seeks to illuminate that "...the Emperor has no clothes". Performances will take place on Saturday, September 21 at 8pm, and Sunday, September 22 at 7pm. All performances are at Dance Place, 3225 8th Street NE Washington, DC 20017. For tickets call (202) 269-1600 or visit danceplace.org. Sunday evening's 7pm performance includes a presentation of the Pola Nirenska Award to Laura Schandelmeier. |
